A 5-day industrial short course

This 5-day course introduces DSP in a practical way. We show how you can analyze the signal and noise characteristics to guide the choice and design of suitable processing for an application goal, and let you estimate the hardware requirements. We introduce each process in a systematic way along with its effects and computational requirements, including how to specify the design parameters. The end result is that you will not only understand DSP and how to apply it but will also be able to estimate clear quantitative design specifications and choose design parameters.

You will learn how to:

  • analyze and quantify the signal and noise sources
  • outline the DSP for a given application
  • specify, design and apply filters and FFT analysis based on signal and noise
  • estimate required sample rates, computational requirements and arithmetic precision
  • explore ways to implement the processing efficiently

Practical work is based on simple but realistic design scenarios in which you will be given a DSP requirement specifiation. You will then:

  • Measure and estimate the signal and noise characteristics
  • Analyze the requirement and refine the specification
  • Decide on the DSP processing that you will apply
  • Estimate the required sample rates and arithmetic precision
  • Specify and design any required filters and FFT analysis based on the signal and noise estimation
  • Implement the required processing in simulation
  • Estimate the computational requirements
