TriMedia overview - smart multimedia peripherals

The TriMedia System on Chip concept leverages co-processors and 'smart' peripherals to supplement the CPU core's processing capabilities. For instance the video peripherals include real-time video image scaling and filtering, and support video overlays with alpha blending and chroma keying. The 'smartness' of the peripherals allows very much greater video processing rates, by offloading the CPU which is then free for more versatile processing.

The particular configuration of peripherals and co-processors depends on the System on Chip implementation. For example a company licensing the TriMedia architecture could choose to implement a set of peripherals and co-processors to suit their own special target markets. An example of such a 'special' System on Chip design is the Philips pnx8500 which has a hardware MPEG-2 encoder and a MIPS co-processor core on the single chip device.

Four System on Chip configurations are sold as readily available standard devices: the Philips nexperia family
